Superstar puppies today

Some of the best puppies on the track are running tonight. They will be taking the track at Mardi Gras and it should be a fun race to watch!

Mardi Gras Evening, Race #2
7 Atascocita Bowl.
3 Its A Phenomenon
5 Packin The Heat

I'm not sure this is a good race to wager, looking for value is tough. The odds on favorite should be the Packin' the heat. The heat likes running mid track and is well positioned here.

The other two puppies I like are both shippers from Palm Beach. Phenomenon is a strong contender depending on how early he gets out. Atascocita Bowl may be the most underbet dog of the three and could present the most value for win bettors.

I'd expect the heat to win this race, but the phenomenon and Bowl can win it enough that playing them to win with odds of 3/1 or better would be profitable in the long run.

Don't know how to win?

That may seem like a silly question at first, but few greyhound players even make win bets anymore. Why? It's pretty simple. Years ago the tracks started pushing exotic wagers (trifecta, exacta, superfecta etc) so they could offer BIG PAYOUTS and take more for themselves. Imagine takeouts as high as 25% -35%. Trying to overcome a 30% edge is a HUGE uphill battle, even for the best of players.

We have just begun a video training series on playing the win bet for our members at www.greyhoundtracktips.com , this is a concept whose time as come. Mardi Gras has now lowered their takeout to 9.4% on win wagers. This is HUGE for the average player. It's MORE THAN HUGE for the serious player. And the players are responding. Win pools have been getting larger and larger in the past few weeks. Starting at modest $300 pools to nearly $3,000 in the win pool this past Sunday night!

Why is this important? Simple. A low house take means more money in your pocket. Only playing a dog to win means your job as a player is easier. And larger pools mean you can make larger win bets, which means larger returns!

What's your angle?

Greyhound racing is a mutuel sport. You are not playing against the track owner. You are playing against the other players at the track. If you understand this then it's only logical that you should be looking at a race from a different angle if possible.

The most common handicapping factor is speed. Rest assured that every player at the track is probably using this as their only handicapping factor, or it is their main factor. Any race where you can see advantage with other factors to exploit means you will be going against the crowd money. This is the easiest way to move their money into your pocket.

Spend a few days only using speed as your LAST factor rather than your first. See if you don't start picking up on some wins that your opponents are missing. The result will be bigger profits in your future!

Puppy Pick 2/23/11

Palm Beach Matinee
Race 12
Custom Trent

This outstanding puppy is going for 5 wins in a row. I like his chances against this field. There isn't much value in any wagers other than trifecta and superfecta. I for isolating secondary runners I would look at the 6 Atascocita Tiera as a strong player in this field.

Good Luck!

Win betting for fun and profit!

Win Betting For Profits
Keeping it simple”

If you are not participating in the “Virtual Clubhouse” every Thursday – Monday nights at www.bigjackpotbetting.com then you are missing out on a lot of fun and profit!!

Mardi Gras has taken the lead in the greyhound racing industry by offering the lowest 'house take' on the simplest wager of them all, the WIN bet. If you are like most players then you have turned to playing exotic wagers to extract profits from shrinking pools. Since the simple win bet has become a historic relic I think it is worth learning the basic principles of this wager. As with anything in life there are many way to approach something. What follows is the way I approach this wager successfully in the simplest terms possible. Your individual mileage will vary.

Step 1
I look through the program for each night and try and determine what races I think I can pick a winner in, and which races I think I can't. As I teach my players with all other types of wagers, play the races you think you can be successful with. Leave the others alone.

It varies from night to night but on average I would say I come up with 8 or 10 playable races of the 16 that are offered.

Step 2
Find more than 1 winner. Some of the races I don't play have a pretty obvious winner. While most players will choose to put their money into these races I usually choose to pass. When you have a monster greyhound that will most likely win 70% of the time or more you will rarely get the odds needed to play this puppy. Rather than try to bet against him I will just pass this race altogether.

The races I look for have a couple of dogs that I think have a decent shot at winning. All races are dependent on something happening for a greyhound to be successful. In most cases, if that 'thing' doesn't happen then there is another greyhound likely to win when that happens.

Let's say I like a pretty speedy puppy with great early speed that is running from the dreaded 6 box. Generally speaking this puppy will HAVE to rely on that early foot to clear the turn. And in fact this dog will probably be successful a good portion of the time. In the same race there is a classy solid grade dropper. Not a real speedy dropper, but one with the moxy to dig in and win. So I have two likely winners. Which one do I play?

Step 3
Play the puppy giving you the best return on your investment. I'm throwing some hypothetical numbers at your now, but in some races this is pretty close to what you may see. Your early speedster will probably win the race 35% of the time and let's say the classy dog wins it 25% of the time.

If the pools are laying you 6/5 on your speed dog and 6/1 on your class dog, then the smart money will go on the class dog. So this is the dog you will see me bet every time. If for some reason the speed dog goes off at 5/2 or 3/1 then I'll take him. Winning isn't everything. Getting paid the right amount when you win is. I never care about hitting 5 out of 10 races. I care about having more money when I'm finished playing than when I started.

Final thoughts

Playing Mardi Gras 1/27/11 I had a few races that I like on the two cards. I got a big winner in race 2 with the #6 Honorary Pilot. I liked the 8 and the 6 for this race. The 8 was around 2/1 when I made my bet. The 6 was at 11/1. So I bet the 6.

6 won and paid $24.40. Nice hit!

Race 5 – I liked the 7 and 6. The 7 was sitting at 9/5 when I made my wager. The 6 was 5/1. So I played the 6. #6 Paw Jive Willie won and paid $13.00

Those were the ONLY two races I won on the first half of the card.

2 for 8. 25% win percentage. Nothing to write home about.

I played all 8 races on that card. Base wager of $2 comes up to $16 wagered. Payoffs for my two winners was $37.40. That comes out to $21.40 profit and 133% ROI.

That last number is the one I care about. ROI. Return on Investment.

So narrow your races down to the ones you have the best shot of understanding. Then play your picks for value, not win percentage. In the end, I'd be happy going 1 for 20 is the one winner I had paid $80.00!!!

Don't think that happens?

Look at Mardi Gras 1/28/11, late evening card, Race #2.

The return of the win wager to greyhound racing

Mardi Gras (formerly Hollywood in Florida) announces lower take out on Win wagers.

For the serious greyhound player we must ask ourselves is this something to get excited about? My simple one-word answer is YES! There are several reasons to be excited about this change at Mardi Gras. Let's look at some of them.

1. More Win wager action
I play horses and greyhounds. While they are both sports where animals race in a circle, I play the two completely differently. Why?
Because there isn't enough money in the win pool in greyhound racing to make a $100 win bet on your pick. In horse racing there
is over $100,000 in the win pool at some tracks. You can safely wager $100 without crushing the pool and ruining your return. Our
hope is that this decreased take out will encourage more players to wager in this pool which gives us another option for wagering.

2. Simple wagers
As a professional greyhound player I learned early that if I was to make any money doing this I would need to play the exotic pools.
It's a tough thing to do for a couple of reasons. The odds are stacked against you. First, it's harder to pick a trifecta that it is to only
pick one dog to win. And what do you get for all your trouble? A LARGER track take out. 25% or more for trifecta wagers. A 25%
disadvantage is very difficult to overcome. With this offering in the win pool you can make easier wagers and see less of the pool taken
by the track. This means more winning and less 'juice' on your wagers, theoretically making it easier to show a profit.

3. Easier to learn the game
If you are a new player you have an advantage that I didn't have when I started. You have less of a mountain to climb to show a profit
AND you can do it while playing the most simple wager available. The win wager.

All of these are reasons that both "pro's" and "newbies" should be excited about this change at Mardi Gras.
