Close counts in greyhound racing

To be successful in greyhound wagering you must have a chest full of 'tools' to help you be successful. A few items on this list should be:

1. Proper Bankroll
2. Ability to find power keys
3. Ability to find Value keys

There are many more. Today I will discuss Value keys. In my daily grind as a professional handicapper I rely on POWER KEYS for more than half of my wagering profits. These keys win a high percentage of the time but are usually chalk (betting favorites). I leverage my ability to spot them and play them with a mathematically advantaged wager structure. In short, I hit the exotic wagers with less combinations bet than the average person playing the race. Their wasted wagers/combinations wind up in my pocket as profits.

Value keys come from several different insights. The easiest to spot is the 'close' greyhound. Let's assume you have a race with a really strong greyhound. When you compare this greyhound to the others in the race you see that there is one or two others that are very close in speed and ability. Now the obvious greyhound may go off at 2/1 odds or less, but these other 'close' contenders may go off and 5/1, 9/1 or even higher. If you can learn to spot these races and track them you will find that the obvious greyhound doesn't really win at a significantly higher rate than the others that are close. But you are getting a lot higher odds on the close contenders. So what is your strategy here?

I would say you  dump the chalk and play the VALUE hounds in that race. You may find when the chalk key wins the trifecta may only pay $50 or $100. But when the CLOSE contenders with it could pay $500 or higher. This is especially true when the obvious chalk missed the board (which happens often!) So you should always have a combination or two played that takes into account the chalk greyhound not even making the money.

Be smart and you will see that CLOSE counts in horseshoes AND greyhound racing!

I train the most talented and profitable group of greyhound players anywhere. We would love to have you join us. For about the cost of one good wager a month you can be a member too. Even better you will move from being a losing player to being a profitable player. I have a couple of slots open right now which is rare and won't last long. I cap my membership at 35 players.

Using Quickdog handicapping software - backtesting

At my website I teach people how to use Quickdog software as a tool to win. In my opinion NO software can pick winners for you and make you profitable. But Quickdog can put all of the tools, information and stats you need at your fingertips to help you handicap to win! On my site I teach players every aspect of winning. Handicapping, playing trifecta's, wager structuring, bankroll management, how to know what races to play and what races to pass. It is a 100% comprehensive university for greyhound players. But many people ask me about the basics of quickdog. I try to provide as much free assistance to players each year as I can. Below is a link to a 20 minute video on some of the features of quickdog. It is Part 1 of a 3 part series on backtesting. I hope you enjoy it.

Greyhound wagering is as easy as you make it

In nearly 10 years of working with people and helping them become profitable playing greyhounds I have learned one thing: Everyone has something that they do pretty well. The only players this doesn't apply to is someone who just started playing greyhounds this week. If you have been trying for several months or years then YOU have something that you do pretty well.

The easiest way to start making money right now (or at least start limiting your losses) is to evaluate what you do well and then do more of it!

The first step in this process is to keep records. Every race that you play (or play on paper) you need a record of your picks, your wagers, your wins and losses, what grade the race was and the distance of the race. In the old days keeping records was a nightmare. With computers and spreadsheets so readily available now and so easy to learn, there is no excuse for not keeping records.

Maybe you see you can pick the winner a high percentage of the time in Grade A. Or you hit the exacta in grade A a high percentage of the time. It could be that you are really doing well in maiden races. Look at everything from every angle and put your money where you have the best chance of winning!

If you see that you are losing 95% on Grade C races at 660 yards....DONT PLAY THEM ANYMORE. You can keep playing them on paper and figure out how to make money. But don't bet another real dollar until you figure it out. Take the money you would be betting on these races you have no record of being profitable in and add it to your wagers on the races you are doing well at.

Being profitable is hard but it isn't difficult. Using some good ole common sense is your best bet.

I teach people how to play profitably. You will learn more than you ever have before when you become one of my members. www.greyhoundtracktips.com

What is more important. Handicapping or wagering?

This may be the easiest question I have ever answered about playing the greyhounds. Wagering is by far the most important thing that will affect your profit and ROI.

If I were in a contest that required me to place wagers on handicappers and who would do best over time, I would bet all my money on the modest handicapper with outstanding wagering skills over the worlds best handicapper with poor wagering skills. How important is wagering? I'll give you a real life example from today. I had a member of my pro greyhound training site , www.greyhoundtracktips.com , ask me about races to play today. I told him I would give him my best race of the day but he should apply the things he had learned so far to play it the best he could. At the end of the day we would compare notes on how he played it, how I played it and make adjustments to his process as needed.

The race was Palm Beach Matinee Race 3 (todays date 9/22/11)

We just talked a few minutes ago and here is how he played the race:
$3 1/8/A
$3 1/A/8
$5 exacta 1/28

He hit the race. His total wager cost $46  (in our first conversation based on his bankroll I advised him to shoot for an investment of around $50 on the race). His return was $100.10 for a profit of $54.10

Now that is very respectable. He made OVER 100% ROI on this race. In our discussion I first congratulated him on picking it right and getting a very respectable return on his wager. And then I shared my wager.

The reason I thought writing about this today is because we had the exact same dogs narrowed down for our play. So his picks were exactly like mine. The only difference was how we wagered it. Here is my wager

$3  1/28/28
$2  1/A/28
$10 Exacta 1/28

My total wager was $50 exactly. My return was $180.50 for a $130.50 profit. For the same investment I made nearly triple the profit and ROI for my wager.

Now I'm not saying I would always wager better than him on an individual race. There would be some races I might actually miss or only hit small on a single line of wagering that he would get paid and I wouldn't or get very little. But what I did do, and what I always try to do is MAXIMIZE my return when I am RIGHT!

If I could ask you one question that might help improve your returns it would be this. Do you ever make a straight trifecta wager? If not you should. You need to handicap the race the best you can and then make a wager that reflects you being right. Why? A straight tri is only $2. And you won't be exactly right a lot of the time. But when you are right, your ROI on that single line will be massive compared to your $12 line where you hit it for a $1 payoff. So spread your wagers and make sure at least ONE of your wagers will reward you when you are EXACTLY right!

This is how pro's maximize profits. Thats what we teach and live at www.greyhoundtracktips.com

We'd love to have you join the ONLY online training university for greyhound players.

Chalk in greyhound handicapping. Another greyhound track tip

It is Saturday morning as I write this. I am preparing for a great day of matinee and evening performances to play and win! I just visited the members forum at my online greyhound players training site. This is where I teach people how to win. They win by watching me, a professional player, in over 50 hours of streaming video.

Member 401 posted
"Prior to the U (He means Pup U, as my members have dubbed it) I would have been one of the guys arguing with you about playing the chalk, but no more. Also love the at a glance style of your methods. Looking forward to the next installment. Some live capping with this method would be great. It's been a while and these are always my favorite videos. Thanks and keep winning"

Playing so called "chalk" correctly is one of the most profiable, low variance ways of playing. I have several arsenals I use at the track. But find REAL sold chalk key dogs is my bread and butter.

So what would be my best tip for playing chalk? It's real simple. You have to identify the REAL chalk and stay away from false favorites. Every race will have a favorite. In most races these favorites will be bet down to less than 2/1. At less than 2/1 make sure you have a dog and really and truely dominates the rest of the field. This key dog can't be slightly better. He/She must be better by an overwhelming margin.

Come learn how to win with us. In the quote from one of my members above, he asked about live handicapping video. These are my most popular videos on the site. My members get to watch me actually handicap and play races. It is an invaluable tool. It can be what gets you to the next level!

What's the most important thing to win at the greyhound track

Everyone wants to know how to win at the greyhound track. And everyone wants to know the secret to winning more at the greyhound track. The truth is, there isn't really just one thing and there certainly isn't a secret. So why am I writing a blog about this? Simple, there is one thing that will help. It isn't the ONLY thing and it isn't a secret. But it is the best starting point. Of course, this is my opinion. But I think my opinion carries some weight. I have been winning for over 15 years at the track.

The starting point for successful handicapping in my opinion is speed. It is from this launching point that all other factors should be considered. Let me illustrate this with an extreme hypothetical race situation. Lets assume you have a standard US 8 dog race. Seven of the greyhounds average a finish time of 31.00. Now lets imagine the remaining dog has an average finish time of 29.00. A whole second advantage. I would submit to you that post position, track conditions, class of the other dogs or anything else wouldn't matter much in this race. Is it possible the standout dog could lose? Sure, anything is possible. Is it going to happen enough that betting against this greyhound would be profitable? Not likely.

So it is from a first evaluation based on speed that you begin your journey. In races with very closely matched dogs, speed won't be the factor. But you must know the speed to identify this. So speed is still the first factor. Once you evaluate the speed of the greyhounds you can rank them. The top half are your most likely contenders (it could be all 8 of course if they are ranked closely enough) and you start with these contenders.

What will make the difference for these contenders? Will it be the post? Will it be track bias? Will it be the kennel? How many other things can you look at that will matter? You need to look at them all until you find a greyhound best positioned to get the advantage.

So the answer to the original question in my opinion is speed. It is merely the starting point, but it is an important starting point. Possible the most important of anything you can look at.

How to win more at the greyhound track in these uncertain times

You may be aware that several pieces of legislation in Florida and other states have been up for votes this year that could potentially eliminate many greyhound tracks around the country. It looks like most of them have failed for now but I am certain they will come up again in the future. If you earn your income from playing the greyhounds then this legislation is very important for you. Even the casual player should have a plan as well and learn how to adapt in these changing times.

How should you change your play?
If you are a person that only plays one track you should seriously begin looking at other tracks to play. Many basics of handicapping apply to all tracks but each track has unique qualities you will learn. The only way to learn this unique aspects of other tracks is by playing them (even if on paper), keeping records and learning what works and doesn't.

If you play multiple tracks your strategy should be a little different, especially if you are a 'spot player' or cherry picker. If even one track you normally play were to close then you could miss out on several plays a week you have become accustomed to playing. The way to adjust is by looking for at least one more play per track each day. These won't be cherry picked plays, they will need to be value plays. Look for patterns or opportunities to play a potential long shot you wouldn't normally play.

No matter your current method of play you need to always be prepared for the future!

I have 3 slots open at my greyhound university where I teach players to play like a pro. My most recent video training series has just been published for members to view and learn from. In this series "7 days with Pup" My members get to see me play days in a row. They learn how I approach the races everyday, decide what races to play, structure my wagers and cash big. One of the races I hit was for over $1,800 with multiple trifecta and superfecta tickets on one race.

You can play like a pro too. You just need to learn from a pro.

Greyhound handicapping made easy!

You want to win money at the greyhound track? Do you want the secret to winning at the greyhound track? I am going to share it with you in this blog ONLY if you promise NOT to tell anyone else!

To win you must pick the greyhound that will reach the finish line first!!! That's it in a nutshell.

If you are thinking you have just wasted 10 seconds of your life reading this, give me a chance to redeem myself. I am making the point that too many players get hung up on things other than the goal I stated above. Let me give you an example or two.

Have you ever spent 5 minutes trying to figure out what dog would break first? Have you agonized on deciding what dog will clear the 1/8th call first? I could go on and on but you get the idea. While these are certainly aspects of handicapping, if you don't make the leap from that one bit of information to this...which dog will win...then you are not accomplishing much.

What does it matter if a dog breaks first if he will be passed by another dog before the turn? What does it matter if a dog clears the 1/8th call first if he will be passed on the back stretch?

There are many things that happen in a greyhound race. You need to understand them all to pick a winner. And ultimately you need to be able to answer the most important question of all when you are done. What greyhound will reach the finish line first?

If you have read books, tried software and listened to the advice of others and still find you are losing money at the track...let me help. Your path to becoming a winner starts here: www.greyhoundtracktips.com

Handicapping greyhound racing. Track Bias

I have commented recently how much profit I have made at a particular track using ONLY track bias and nothing else. I mean, when certain post positions win 62% of the time and you frequently get odds of 10/1 and higher on those post position, why make handicapping harder than it has to be?

Most recently I was listening to some decent handicappers break a race down to the nth degree. Meanwhile the posts I liked were sitting at 7/1 and 14/1 respectively. Their logical winner missed the board completely and I hit a $30+ winner.

Do you know the bias at the tracks you play? I'm not saying this situation happens all the time at every track, but it is an exaggerated example of how much track bias could help your greyhound wagering skills.

If you don't have a comprehensive plan for playing the greyhounds you will lose. You must know all angles, all of the time, to win consistently. That's what we teach at www.greyhoundtracktips.com

The max bet for max profits when greyhound betting

The correct amount to wager depends on several thing. When people ask what makes us different at www.greyhoundtracktips.com I tell them it's because we cover important things like this. No one else does.

1. When you are a novice player with a small bankroll your bets should be based on only one thing. The size of your bankroll. You should never bet more than 5% of your betting bankroll on a single race. 2% is the most optimum.

2. When your bankroll grows some your priority changes to betting according to your advantage. Your skill will also have grown. You will bet more on races where you have a huge advantage and less in races where you have a small advantage.

3. When you have the maximum bankroll and knowledge you will be looking to bet the maximum that the pool you are betting into can withstand. You will want to extract as much money from that pool as possible while maintaining a minimum return for your wager.

Those are the guidelines. It is more complicated than that because you must know how to bet. You must know what your advantage is in a race. You must know what pool wagering ratios are and what the minimum return is. But now you know where to start. If you want to know more than just a starting point we'd be glad to teach you at www.greyhoundtracktips.com

Greyhound tips, picks and software

I get more questions about greyhound picks, greyhound tips and greyhound software. Everyone wants to know which of these will give them winners. The answer is ALL of them will give you winners. But here is what NONE of them will do.

NONE of them will tell you what races to play
NONE of them will tell you how to structure your wager
NONE of them will teach you bankroll management
NONE of them will help you with the psychology of gambling
NONE of them will let you walk beside a professional player and learn

www.greyhoundtracktips.com DOES do these things. If you have tried all else, why not try the only online greyhound university?

How many tools are in your handicapping toolbox?

When I first started playing the greyhounds at the greyhound track I only knew speed. Back in those days I would take a calculator and add the running times of each greyhound up, divide by the number of races and get an average. That was the extent of my handicapping abilities, and it picks a fair amount of winners, but they are usually the chalk of the race. The worst problem is that it is only one tool in a toolbox that needs to be full of handicapping tricks.

I later learned about the importance of class, post position and other things. As I got better at handicapping my toolbox filled up. The thing I LOVE about greyhound racing is that no matter how long I play I can still learn more. I am always searching for something to give me an extra edge over the other players at the track.

My advice to players who want to win but aren't is to play less races. Play the TYPES of races you know you are good at playing. As your tookbox grows so will the number of races you can play. One day you will reach a level so you can play 50% or 60% of the races profitably.

I founded www.greyhoundtracktips.com to help players fill up their toolbox of handicapping skills. That is why we call it an online greyhound university. It's much more than a pick sheet or some pithy advice. It is an on going education. I mean, it took me nearly a decade of serious study and many losing years to learn to play profitably. I can tell you now that you won't learn to be a winner in a week, month or more. We are there for the long haul at greyhoundtracktips.com. You come in as a losing player and you learn at your own pace. And our goal is to have you leave us a winning player.

How full is your toolbox?

Don't ignore the obvious when handicapping

While playing tonight and chatting with other players in the chatroom something became obvious to me. Sometimes you just can't ignore the obvious. If you had a sure fire way of hitting the winner in a race 41% of the time, with NO effort on your part...why wouldn't you? I don't know the answer to that question.

Most tracks have updated stats on their website so you can check post position wins. If you use software like Quickdog you can also keep these stats yourself. If you check out the most recent stats for Palm Beach located here, you can do a little math and follow along with me.

The stats for the 660 races show that the 1 and 2 position combined win 41% of the time. Yep, with no other factors you can hit the winner 41% of the time at PB in these races by simply playing the 1 and 2 dog to win.

I was playing MG tonight (where the stats are similar) and I hit some pretty nice winners and trifecta's by using this rule. In one of the races the 2 dog was around 15/1 and the 1 dog was 7/1. The 1 dog won and the trifecta paid handsomely.

The point is, don't go reinventing the wheel. not just in this instance, but in any instance where you KNOW something. Do what you know!

How many ways can you skin a cat?

I hope no one actually skins cats! It's just an old saying. There is usually more than one way to accomplish the same goal which is the subject of this blog post.

I was in the chatroom at www.bigjackpotbetting.com tonight when someone made some comments about my pick in a particular race. I might add that the pick in question won. This person, who I will concede seems to be a pretty good player from all I know, proceeded to take stabs at my play and insinuate it wouldn't be profitable if I kept playing picks like that.

If you recall my last blog post about records it will come as no surprise to you that I know what plays are profitable. It's my job to know. If I don't play profitably then my mortgage doesn't get paid, they reposess my Lincoln and confiscate my fiancee's engagement ring. I am here to tell you that I am not prepared for that to happen.

While I am 100% confident in my ability to play the greyhounds and make a living doing it I will also conceed that there are probably other ways to play and show a profit. I don't have the corner on the market when it comes to greyhound racing. But I do have a profitable line on it. And that is my point.

Do you know how profitable you are? Do you know what plays will show you profit when the year is over and which plays won't?

I do. And one of my greatest pieces of advice to you as a struggling player would be to have a goal of knowing what plays are profitable for you, and which plays aren't.

Are you keeping records?

Keeping records means record profits at the greyhound track

I'm always surprised when someone comes to me to learn how to win at the greyhound track. Without fail I learn that don't keep any records. None. Nada. Zilch! So I ask them, "How do you know what is working and what isn't?" They never have an answer.

If you are going to take the money you worked hard to earn and bet it on a greyhound you need to know if the bet you are making is a profitable one long term. How do you know this? Records! The more detailed records you keep the more you will learn about YOUR handicapping. You will find things you are doing that work as well as things you are doing that don't.

I was on my back deck this afternoon and a bumblebee was buzzing around. He was very agitated. I am not generally scared of bees so I went about my business. It just so happened that about the same time I was ready to come back in the house he decided to rush at me and 'buzz' me. He didn't sting me but he was letting me know he wasn't happy with me in his space. I went on in the house as I was doing any way. I doubt that bee's keep detailed records so I imagine this bee probably thinks that rushing me like that made me leave. That isn't true. It was just coincidence. He will find this out next time I am out side and I see him.

Now if many bees before him had kept detailed records they could probably tell him that threatening humans will end in his demise. Likewise you should be keeping detailed records of your play. You need to learn the things you are doing that will lead to your demise.

Greyhound tips and greyhound racing pick sheets

A lot of people ask me about getting a greyhound tips sheet or greyhound pick sheet. This is something I provided for several years to players and honestly the results weren't optimum for several reasons.

1. Even though players had some picks to look at they still didn't understand how to play
2. Players would play my picks plus their picks and a combination of both
3. The complexity of greyhound wagering can't be mastered with a simple pick sheet

That is why I started working with people on a one-on-one basis. I had various degrees of success which depended on the person I was working with. Those who applied themselves and kept working with me were successful. Some were very successful. And honestly there were a couple who felt like they didn't learn anything from me. I can tell you from someone who has played for a living for over 10 years that they were the reason, it wasn't me.

One year ago I launched a revolutionary idea. An online greyhound training university. This allowed players to literally be by my side while I played. With over 40 hours of video on the site (and more added every week) players are able to learn by watching me play. And they learn at their own pace.

This is the best idea I ever had to help people learn to play the greyhound profitably. And considering that over 80% of players that joined my site one year ago are STILL MEMBERS today says a lot about the quality, the passion and the value of our approach.

If you are serious about learning to play greyhound profitably then you should check us out.

One of the plays most people learn early on at the greyhound track is grade droppers. Even still, you can sometimes find great value in these greyhounds but you need to know what to look for. You usually get the best price on these dogs when there is another dog with fast times moving up or in the same grade as the race you are playing.

Not all grade droppers are created equal. When you are looking at one of these hounds and the speed looks competitive with the other runners you should look at the finish positions. I like for the greyhound to have lower finishes in the higher grade rather than 6, 7 or 8's.

Let's say your race is a grade D race and you have a dog dropping down from grade C. Actually lets compare two dogs in this same position.

Dog A finished 3rd, 5th and 4th in it's past 3 races.
Dog B finished 6th, 5th and 8th in it's past 3 races.

I like to use the 'subtract 3' rule. You simply subtract 3 from the finish position of your grade dropper. In our example about it would then look like this:

Dog A finished 1st, 2nd and 1st.
Dog B finished 3rd, 2nd and 5th.

You can see grade droppers are not all created equal. There are other factors you should consider, but try the 'subtract 3' rule and see if it doesn't help you find some juicy payouts on grade droppers.

What kind of race are you playing?

If you answered "greyhound race" then we need to talk!

There are several different 'types' of greyhound races. Here's a few to get us started:

Playable
Unplayable
Highly competitive
Equally uncompetitive
Diversely competitive

Yes, I made some of those names up. The important thing to learn is that making greyhound picks
for a race is easier when you know what type of race it is. The first two are simple. a race is either
playable or unplayable. You can either figure it out and show a profit or you can't. Obviously you
shouldn't play a race that is unplayable.

Highly competitive. A great example of this type of race would be a stakes race. More specifically, the
races going on at Mardi Gras right now. Sunday night kicked off the action with superstar dogs from
all over the country running for fame and fortune. These races are a 'who's who' of greyhound racing.

Most of these races I would just pass on. Even if you see a greyhound that looks to be best, it could be
beaten on any given day by the other amazing greyhounds in the field.

Equally uncompetitive. You know these races. Races where all of the greyhounds are equally bad. You can't
find a single key that stands out. These races are generally not profitable to play.

Diversely competitive. These races are much better. You have greyhound of varying ability. It allows you to
isolate a key and isolate secondary runners as well. If you can do this better then the average player, then you
will make money!

So the next time you start handicapping ask yourself, "What kind of race is this?" And proceed accordingly.

The secret to winning more at the greyhound track

The title is a little misleading because there really isn't a secret to winning more at the greyhound track. In fact it's quite simple. To win more you must...LOSE LESS!

That seems simple enough right? It seems too simple to even be true. But it is. Every dollar you lose is a dollar you have to win back. Then you have to win even more back on top to make a profit. Here are simple ways to lose less and win more at the greyhound track!

1. Play less races
Go through the card at your track and find the top 5 races. These would be the races you think you have the best shot at winning. ONLY play those 5. What do you do the other races? Enjoy watching these amazing animals run! Maybe make minimum win wagers just so you have a small stake in the outcome. But that's it. Save your major money for the 5 best races of the day!

2. Play less combinations
If you are playing exacta's or trifecta's, play less combinations! Most people are boxing 4 dogs to win. Or they will wheel a key with almost every dog in the race. Start by eliminating at least 2 dogs that can NOT make the money. Then see if you can eliminate 1 or 2 more. Make your exotic wagers based on these remaining dogs. Sure, you will lose some races because you left a dog out. But the money you save over the long run will be way more! Don't believe me? Try it 6 months and track your results both ways. You will see.

I could blog every hour of the day and not come close to everything we teach at www.greyhoundtracktips.com. The best part of our training are the 30+ hours of video where you get to play along side a pro and see what I do everyday. You learn to win but being with a winner.

Looking for a cash cow? Here's how to find one!

It's no secret that you will go broke if you play the favorite to win in every race. If you play exotics and you key the favorite in your wagers you are very likely to go broke as well unless you are very accomplished at wager structure. This brings us back to one of the prime goals in wagering: finding value. For the purposes of this article we will call it "Finding the cash cow."

There are several different spot plays that yield high priced puppies to wager on. One of my favorites is looking for class, or back class, in a race that is pretty evenly ranked in terms of ability otherwise.

Let's say the entire field (or the competitive portion of the field) has ART (average run times) within a margin of error that they could all win. In this case there is no clear winner. No one that stands above the rest.

Many times in this instance you will see a greyhound that is outside the limits in terms of ART. They may have been out because of injury, training or other reasons. You will often see these greyhounds come back and school with pretty slow times. These greyhounds are diamonds in the rough.

Let's say the race is a GRADE D race. Your potential cash cow was competitive in GRADE A 3 months back, More competitive in GRADE B two months back, and didn't do really well in GRADE C before going on a break. In today's race this puppy is coming back in GRADE D. That's a triple drop from GRADE A where the greyhound was competitive only a few months ago.

Even though the results in it's most recent races don't look good, it's likely this greyhound is ready to fire today for a nice price. and if not this race, then the next one. So put some money on this puppy and get ready to get paid more often than not and some nice odds.

I train players to spot all kinds of spot plays like this AND to wager properly and dominate greyhound racing in many aspects. Visit us online at www.greyhoundtracktips.com

Playing a longshot? Not so fast!

If you are like me then you abhor the thought of playing a 6/5 favorite. I nearly refuse to do it! Notice is said nearly...

There is a favorite in every race, many times paying 2/1 or less. The wise player will not play this weak favorite or false favorite. The wise player will look for value. The thing you must always remember are the two words I used: weak and false.

A REAL favorite should not be bet against. Even though you may not be getting good odds to bet the favorite, you are also probably not getting good odds to bet against either. This leaves you with a few options.

1. You can key the true favorite with some 'value' dogs for the quinella, exacta or even the trifecta.
2. You pass the race and just enjoy watching it run.

Of all the tools you should have as a handicapper, being able to spot a TRUE favorite is one of them!

Superstar puppies today

Some of the best puppies on the track are running tonight. They will be taking the track at Mardi Gras and it should be a fun race to watch!

Mardi Gras Evening, Race #2
7 Atascocita Bowl.
3 Its A Phenomenon
5 Packin The Heat

I'm not sure this is a good race to wager, looking for value is tough. The odds on favorite should be the Packin' the heat. The heat likes running mid track and is well positioned here.

The other two puppies I like are both shippers from Palm Beach. Phenomenon is a strong contender depending on how early he gets out. Atascocita Bowl may be the most underbet dog of the three and could present the most value for win bettors.

I'd expect the heat to win this race, but the phenomenon and Bowl can win it enough that playing them to win with odds of 3/1 or better would be profitable in the long run.

Don't know how to win?

That may seem like a silly question at first, but few greyhound players even make win bets anymore. Why? It's pretty simple. Years ago the tracks started pushing exotic wagers (trifecta, exacta, superfecta etc) so they could offer BIG PAYOUTS and take more for themselves. Imagine takeouts as high as 25% -35%. Trying to overcome a 30% edge is a HUGE uphill battle, even for the best of players.

We have just begun a video training series on playing the win bet for our members at www.greyhoundtracktips.com , this is a concept whose time as come. Mardi Gras has now lowered their takeout to 9.4% on win wagers. This is HUGE for the average player. It's MORE THAN HUGE for the serious player. And the players are responding. Win pools have been getting larger and larger in the past few weeks. Starting at modest $300 pools to nearly $3,000 in the win pool this past Sunday night!

Why is this important? Simple. A low house take means more money in your pocket. Only playing a dog to win means your job as a player is easier. And larger pools mean you can make larger win bets, which means larger returns!

What's your angle?

Greyhound racing is a mutuel sport. You are not playing against the track owner. You are playing against the other players at the track. If you understand this then it's only logical that you should be looking at a race from a different angle if possible.

The most common handicapping factor is speed. Rest assured that every player at the track is probably using this as their only handicapping factor, or it is their main factor. Any race where you can see advantage with other factors to exploit means you will be going against the crowd money. This is the easiest way to move their money into your pocket.

Spend a few days only using speed as your LAST factor rather than your first. See if you don't start picking up on some wins that your opponents are missing. The result will be bigger profits in your future!

Puppy Pick 2/23/11

Palm Beach Matinee
Race 12
Custom Trent

This outstanding puppy is going for 5 wins in a row. I like his chances against this field. There isn't much value in any wagers other than trifecta and superfecta. I for isolating secondary runners I would look at the 6 Atascocita Tiera as a strong player in this field.

Good Luck!

Win betting for fun and profit!

Win Betting For Profits
Keeping it simple”

If you are not participating in the “Virtual Clubhouse” every Thursday – Monday nights at www.bigjackpotbetting.com then you are missing out on a lot of fun and profit!!

Mardi Gras has taken the lead in the greyhound racing industry by offering the lowest 'house take' on the simplest wager of them all, the WIN bet. If you are like most players then you have turned to playing exotic wagers to extract profits from shrinking pools. Since the simple win bet has become a historic relic I think it is worth learning the basic principles of this wager. As with anything in life there are many way to approach something. What follows is the way I approach this wager successfully in the simplest terms possible. Your individual mileage will vary.

Step 1
I look through the program for each night and try and determine what races I think I can pick a winner in, and which races I think I can't. As I teach my players with all other types of wagers, play the races you think you can be successful with. Leave the others alone.

It varies from night to night but on average I would say I come up with 8 or 10 playable races of the 16 that are offered.

Step 2
Find more than 1 winner. Some of the races I don't play have a pretty obvious winner. While most players will choose to put their money into these races I usually choose to pass. When you have a monster greyhound that will most likely win 70% of the time or more you will rarely get the odds needed to play this puppy. Rather than try to bet against him I will just pass this race altogether.

The races I look for have a couple of dogs that I think have a decent shot at winning. All races are dependent on something happening for a greyhound to be successful. In most cases, if that 'thing' doesn't happen then there is another greyhound likely to win when that happens.

Let's say I like a pretty speedy puppy with great early speed that is running from the dreaded 6 box. Generally speaking this puppy will HAVE to rely on that early foot to clear the turn. And in fact this dog will probably be successful a good portion of the time. In the same race there is a classy solid grade dropper. Not a real speedy dropper, but one with the moxy to dig in and win. So I have two likely winners. Which one do I play?

Step 3
Play the puppy giving you the best return on your investment. I'm throwing some hypothetical numbers at your now, but in some races this is pretty close to what you may see. Your early speedster will probably win the race 35% of the time and let's say the classy dog wins it 25% of the time.

If the pools are laying you 6/5 on your speed dog and 6/1 on your class dog, then the smart money will go on the class dog. So this is the dog you will see me bet every time. If for some reason the speed dog goes off at 5/2 or 3/1 then I'll take him. Winning isn't everything. Getting paid the right amount when you win is. I never care about hitting 5 out of 10 races. I care about having more money when I'm finished playing than when I started.

Final thoughts

Playing Mardi Gras 1/27/11 I had a few races that I like on the two cards. I got a big winner in race 2 with the #6 Honorary Pilot. I liked the 8 and the 6 for this race. The 8 was around 2/1 when I made my bet. The 6 was at 11/1. So I bet the 6.

6 won and paid $24.40. Nice hit!

Race 5 – I liked the 7 and 6. The 7 was sitting at 9/5 when I made my wager. The 6 was 5/1. So I played the 6. #6 Paw Jive Willie won and paid $13.00

Those were the ONLY two races I won on the first half of the card.

2 for 8. 25% win percentage. Nothing to write home about.

I played all 8 races on that card. Base wager of $2 comes up to $16 wagered. Payoffs for my two winners was $37.40. That comes out to $21.40 profit and 133% ROI.

That last number is the one I care about. ROI. Return on Investment.

So narrow your races down to the ones you have the best shot of understanding. Then play your picks for value, not win percentage. In the end, I'd be happy going 1 for 20 is the one winner I had paid $80.00!!!

Don't think that happens?

Look at Mardi Gras 1/28/11, late evening card, Race #2.

The return of the win wager to greyhound racing

Mardi Gras (formerly Hollywood in Florida) announces lower take out on Win wagers.

For the serious greyhound player we must ask ourselves is this something to get excited about? My simple one-word answer is YES! There are several reasons to be excited about this change at Mardi Gras. Let's look at some of them.

1. More Win wager action
I play horses and greyhounds. While they are both sports where animals race in a circle, I play the two completely differently. Why?
Because there isn't enough money in the win pool in greyhound racing to make a $100 win bet on your pick. In horse racing there
is over $100,000 in the win pool at some tracks. You can safely wager $100 without crushing the pool and ruining your return. Our
hope is that this decreased take out will encourage more players to wager in this pool which gives us another option for wagering.

2. Simple wagers
As a professional greyhound player I learned early that if I was to make any money doing this I would need to play the exotic pools.
It's a tough thing to do for a couple of reasons. The odds are stacked against you. First, it's harder to pick a trifecta that it is to only
pick one dog to win. And what do you get for all your trouble? A LARGER track take out. 25% or more for trifecta wagers. A 25%
disadvantage is very difficult to overcome. With this offering in the win pool you can make easier wagers and see less of the pool taken
by the track. This means more winning and less 'juice' on your wagers, theoretically making it easier to show a profit.

3. Easier to learn the game
If you are a new player you have an advantage that I didn't have when I started. You have less of a mountain to climb to show a profit
AND you can do it while playing the most simple wager available. The win wager.

All of these are reasons that both "pro's" and "newbies" should be excited about this change at Mardi Gras.
